Cyprus came under formal British administration in 1878 as part of the Cyprus Convention with the Ottoman Empire, though the island remained nominally Ottoman until 1914, when Britain annexed it outright following the Ottoman entry into World War I. The 9-piastre denomination is peculiar to Cyprus and reflects the island's monetary arithmetic: the shilling equaled 9 piastres under the local system, anchoring the piastre to sterling at a fixed rate that had been imposed since the early colonial period.
KM#13 covers a nine-year span that includes the annexation year, making earlier and later dates within the type technically coins of different sovereign arrangements — though the dies and issuing authority changed nothing to acknowledge it.
