Reverse description At the centre, a crowned shield of arms representing Cyprus divides the date numerals, one on each side of the shield. The crown rests upon a scroll bearing the inscription CYPRUS. The denomination NINE PIASTRES is inscribed along the lower arc of the design, completing the circular layout. The overall heraldic composition is characteristic of British colonial coinage of the early twentieth century.

Additional information

Cyprus came under formal British administration in 1878 as part of the Cyprus Convention with the Ottoman Empire, though the island remained nominally Ottoman until 1914, when Britain annexed it outright following the Ottoman entry into World War I. The 9-piastre denomination is peculiar to Cyprus and reflects the island's monetary arithmetic: the shilling equaled 9 piastres under the local system, anchoring the piastre to sterling at a fixed rate that had been imposed since the early colonial period.

KM#13 covers a nine-year span that includes the annexation year, making earlier and later dates within the type technically coins of different sovereign arrangements — though the dies and issuing authority changed nothing to acknowledge it.
