In the four quadrants formed by the arms of the cross appear the Greek Christogram letters IC XC (Iesus Christus), rendered in a style consistent with Byzantine-influenced Sicilian coinage. The surrounding field is punctuated by pellets or small globules arranged symmetrically. The outer border is defined by a beaded or dotted circle, and the entire design is executed on a hammered irregular flan. The legend IE XS relates to the abbreviated Christological inscription. |
