Carlo I d'Angiò came to Sicily not as a native ruler but as a Papal-backed conqueror, defeating and killing Manfred of Hohenstaufen at Benevento in 1266. His Sicilian coinage — including this issue from Messina — drew directly on the tari tradition inherited from the Norman and Hohenstaufen administrations before him, preserving the denomination rather than imposing an entirely French monetary framework. The decision was pragmatic: the tari was deeply embedded in Sicilian and southern Italian commercial life, and disrupting it would have compounded an already volatile transition of power.
This specific type ended abruptly with the Sicilian Vespers of March 1282, when a popular uprising expelled the Angevins from the island, effectively terminating Carlo's Sicilian mint operations overnight.
