Obverse description The obverse is printed in dark blue-green on cream paper, with the denomination "Fünftausend Mark" rendered in bold blackletter script at the upper centre above a large pale underprint numeral "5000". To the right, a detailed vignette presents the Duisburg civic coat of arms — an eagle surmounting a crenellated tower with flanking cornucopiae and ornate scrollwork — enclosed within a ruled panel with the numeral "5000" below. The left margin carries a vertical guilloche strip of rosette ornaments with the denomination numeral, while the central text panel contains the issuing authority's redemption clause in Gothic script, the place and date "Duisburg, den 15. Oktober 1922", the legend "Der Oberbürgermeister:", a red serial number, and a manuscript signature, all set within a fine lace-pattern border.

Reverse description The reverse is printed in a single dark blue-green tone on cream paper and is symmetrically composed around a central vignette of a crossed anchor and boat-hook — emblems of Duisburg's Rhine river port — set against a fine letterpress text underprint. The city name "Duisburg" appears in bold blackletter at the top centre and "am Rhein" at the bottom, flanking the central motif. Two large circular guilloche rosettes carrying the numeral "5000" occupy the left and right fields, with elaborate acanthus scrollwork filling the corners, and a further decorative guilloche strip with "5000" runs along the right stub margin.
