Surrounding the central letter, the complete Armenian alphabet — all 38 letters — is inscribed in a continuous circular legend along the periphery of the coin. A small ornamental cross divides the alphabetic legend at the top of the design. |

Part of the Central Bank of Armenia's 38-coin series honoring the Armenian alphabet — one coin per letter — introduced to mark the 1,600th anniversary of the script's creation by the monk Mesrop Mashtots around 405 AD. The alphabet was devised specifically to translate Christian scripture into Armenian, and Փ (pronounced roughly as an aspirated "p") is among the letters Mashtots created wholesale, with no direct Greek or Syriac ancestor.
