The Chinese character 當 (dang, meaning 'equal to' or 'valued at') appears at the top, while 五百 (wu bai, 'five hundred') is cast below the central hole. To the right and left of the square perforation appear the Manchu script syllables ᠪᠣᠣ (Boo) and ᡠᠶᠠᠨ (yuwan) respectively, identifying the Board of Works mint in the Manchu language.
