Obverse lettering 咸 豐 元 寶
(Translation: Xian Feng Yuan Bao)
Reverse description Central square perforation flanked by four cast characters and Manchu script arranged in cruciform layout within a plain raised rim. The Chinese character 當 (dang, meaning 'equal to' or 'valued at') appears at the top, while 五百 (wu bai, 'five hundred') is cast below the central hole. To the right and left of the square perforation appear the Manchu script syllables ᠪᠣᠣ (Boo) and ᡠᠶᠠᠨ (yuwan) respectively, identifying the Board of Works mint in the Manchu language. The characters are rendered in the same bold, flat-relief regular script as the obverse, consistent with mid-Xianfeng-era casting practices. The combination of Chinese and Manchu legends reflects the bilingual administrative conventions of the Qing imperial coinage system.
Reverse script Chinese (traditional, regular script), Manchu
