Brunndöbra is a small village in the Vogtland district of Saxony, and its Gemeindekasse — the municipal treasury — issued this 500,000 Mark note during the catastrophic inflation of summer 1923, when the Reichsbank's own supply chain for emergency currency could not keep pace with the collapsing mark. Thousands of German municipalities, businesses, and institutions printed their own Notgeld to cover wages and local transactions; most were redeemed quickly and destroyed, which is precisely why small-community issues like this one are disproportionately scarce relative to the larger city emissions.
The official stamp substituted for more elaborate security — typical of hastily produced Gemeinde issues where the local seal was the only authentication mechanism available.
