Ilmenau's decision to name its 1921 Notgeld series after Goethe was not arbitrary civic pride — the poet lived and worked in the town repeatedly during his decades of service to the Weimar court, and for a time oversaw the local mining operations at the Ilmenauer Bergwerk. The cultural claim was genuine.
The yellow issue is the third color variant in the six-note Hermannstein set, distinguished by paper tint rather than design change. Wiedemannsche Druckerei in Saalfeld handled the full series, a regional printer serving the sharp surge in municipal emergency currency commissions that overwhelmed larger firms in 1921.
