Sankt Blasien is a small spa town in the Black Forest, and its 1920 notgeld issue was one of thousands of municipal emergency notes produced across Germany as post-war coin shortages made small-change transactions nearly impossible. The Reichsbank could not keep pace with demand for low-denomination coinage, so towns and districts issued their own paper scrip under temporary authorization.
These Stadtverwaltung issues were typically redeemable only within the issuing municipality, which kept most in local circulation and away from collectors — though the notgeld collecting craze of the early 1920s changed that quickly, and many towns began printing notes explicitly for the philatelic market rather than genuine monetary need.
