Entre Ríos was one of several Argentine provinces that issued quasi-currency during the 2001–2002 convertibility crisis, when the federal government's freeze on bank withdrawals — the corralito — effectively strangled provincial finances. These provincial bonds, technically "Letras de Cancelación de Obligaciones Provinciales" or similar instruments, circulated as de facto cash because there was nothing else available. Entre Ríos had a long history of fiscal independence and was not shy about it.
