Eferding is one of the oldest market towns in Upper Austria, but this 50 Heller note has nothing to do with civic pride — it exists because the postwar collapse of Austria-Hungary left small denominations in desperately short supply. Hundreds of Austrian municipalities issued their own Notgeld between 1919 and 1921 to fill the gap, and Eferding was among them. These locally printed emergency issues were typically redeemable for a limited period and then withdrawn, which is why many survive in uncirculated condition: collectors hoarded them almost immediately.

Printed locally rather than by one of the major Viennese or German specialty houses, the production quality reflects the constraints of a small municipal administration working with whatever press was available in town.
