Zehetgrub is a tiny settlement in Lower Austria, and this note belongs to the enormous wave of Austrian municipal emergency money — Notgeld — issued during and after the First World War when small-denomination coinage effectively vanished from circulation. W. Tremtier printed from nearby Hainfeld, a logical choice for a community with no meaningful access to Vienna-based printers and an urgent need for something, anything, that would make small transactions possible.
Three signatures were required for validity: the Bürgermeister, his deputy, and a council member. That level of local authentication was common in rural Austrian Notgeld but made production slow and forgery theoretically easier to detect.
