Turnpike companies issuing their own fractional currency was a short-lived but widespread American practice in the years following the War of 1812, when coin shortages made small-denomination exchange genuinely difficult. The Huntingdon, Cambria and Indiana Turnpike Road Company was chartered to build road across the Allegheny ridge — rough country, far from any bank — and the scrip served practical needs along the route rather than any pretense at formal banking.

Murray, Draper, Fairman & Co. were among the most capable security printers working in Philadelphia at the time, later absorbed into the firm that became Toppan Carpenter. Their involvement here is worth noting — most turnpike scrip of this period came off far cruder presses.
