The Arabic legend العيد الوطني العشرون (Twentieth National Day) is inscribed along the upper portion of the field, while the legend نظام الري في عمان (Irrigation System in Oman) appears along the lower field. The design is enclosed within a decorative dashed inner border consistent with the obverse. |

Oman's National Day coinage marks the anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession on July 23, 1970, when he deposed his father Said bin Taimur in a palace coup backed by the British. The 20th anniversary in 1990 fell during a particularly charged moment — Iraq's invasion of Kuwait had occurred just weeks before, and Oman, sharing a border with Yemen and sitting at the mouth of the Gulf, was acutely exposed to the regional instability that followed.
