Oman's National Day coinage marks the anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession on July 23, 1970, when he deposed his father Said bin Taimur in a palace coup backed by the British. The 20th anniversary in 1990 fell during a particularly charged moment — Iraq's invasion of Kuwait had occurred just weeks before, and Oman, sharing a border with Yemen and sitting at the mouth of the Gulf, was acutely exposed to the regional instability that followed.
