The legend سلطنة عمان (Sultanate of Oman) appears divided to the upper left and right of the emblem, with the dual date ١٤١١هـ / ١٩٩٠م (AH 1411 / AD 1990) flanking the emblem at centre. The denomination ٥٠ بيسة (50 Baisa) is inscribed below the emblem, and the issuer legend البنك المركزي العماني (Central Bank of Oman) runs along the lower portion of the field. The design is framed by a decorative dashed border running along the inner edge of the coin. |

Oman's National Day coinage marks the anniversary of Sultan Qaboos bin Said's accession on July 23, 1970, when he deposed his father Said bin Taimur in a palace coup backed by the British. The 20th anniversary in 1990 fell during a particularly charged moment — Iraq's invasion of Kuwait had occurred just weeks before, and Oman, sharing a border with Yemen and sitting at the mouth of the Gulf, was acutely exposed to the regional instability that followed.
