Latvia's first domestic coinage followed the 1922 monetary reform that replaced the provisional Latvian ruble with the lats. These bronze santimi were among the earliest coins struck for the newly independent republic, with production divided across the two-year span as the fledgling central bank established its supply requirements. The blanks and striking were contracted to foreign mints — Latvia had no domestic minting capacity of its own in this period.
