Issued to mark the Sourvakari tradition, a Bulgarian New Year ritual in which young men called sourvakari tap family members with decorated cornel-wood branches to bestow health and prosperity. The practice is rooted in pre-Christian folk custom and remains genuinely observed in rural Bulgaria, not merely commemorated from a safe cultural distance.
