Marburg's 1921 notgeld issue is unusual even within the collector-series boom of the Weimar inflation years — it was produced specifically for a philatelic and notgeld exhibition, meaning it was designed from the outset as an object of display rather than exchange. The printer, W. J. Becker's Kunstanstalt, was a local Marburg firm, which kept the design and production entirely within the town, a rarity when most municipalities farmed such work out to larger specialist houses.
Kurt Schmelz's involvement as designer places this squarely in the artisan tradition of the Serienscheine movement, where local artists were commissioned to produce themed issues that doubled as miniature graphic art.
