| Reverse description | Armored and draped bust of Duke Rudolf August of Brunswick-Lüneburg facing right, rendered in high relief with considerable portrait detail. The duke is depicted wearing richly engraved plate armor with a lace cravat visible at the throat and a voluminous curled periwig falling over his shoulders, reflecting the fashions of the late seventeenth century. The abbreviated Latin legend 'RVD:AVG:D. B.E.LVNEB:' runs around the upper and lateral periphery of the coin, identifying the sitter as Rudolf August, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg. A finely executed beaded border frames the entire design. The portrait is of high artistic quality, consistent with the work of skilled German die-engravers of the period. |
