The duke is depicted wearing richly engraved plate armor with a lace cravat visible at the throat and a voluminous curled periwig falling over his shoulders, reflecting the fashions of the late seventeenth century. The abbreviated Latin legend 'RVD:AVG:D. B.E.LVNEB:' runs around the upper and lateral periphery of the coin, identifying the sitter as Rudolf August, Duke of Brunswick and Lüneburg.
