A beaded inner circle frames the central device. The surrounding circular Latin legend, reading clockwise, incorporates the date '1696' (or '1697' on the overdate variety) divided within the inscription. The design is deeply struck with crisp relief, characteristic of the milled gold coinage produced at the Bahia Mint. |
