Produced at the Salvador mint during a period of acute monetary disorder in colonial Brazil, this issue belongs to the earliest phase of Portuguese crown coinage struck in the Americas. The Bahia mint had only recently been established — in part to process gold flowing from the interior before it could be smuggled out — and early production was plagued by inconsistent roller-mill equipment and undertrained staff, which accounts for the striking irregularities endemic to the type.
The "narrow crown" designation distinguishes it from the wide-crown variant struck almost simultaneously, a die difference with real chronological implications for sequencing production within the 1696–1697 window.
