The standard 2012 200 Rand issue incorporated Omron rings — the constellation pattern used by modern printing equipment to detect and refuse reproduction of banknotes. This variant was issued without them, almost certainly the result of a production batch leaving the South African Bank Note Company's Pretoria facility before the feature was applied or verified. It is not a deliberate design decision but a manufacturing anomaly, and Pick catalogued it separately as a result.
The absence of Omron rings does not affect any of the primary security features, but the omission is significant enough to attract specialist attention — and scrutiny from anyone wondering whether the gap was intentional.
