The Antonov An-124 Ruslan was developed in the late Soviet period by the Antonov Design Bureau in Kyiv, entering service in 1982 as one of the heaviest military transport aircraft ever built — its NATO reporting name, "Condor," understated the machine considerably. After the Soviet collapse, the aircraft became a genuinely Ukrainian asset, with Antonov Airlines operating a commercial fleet out of Kyiv-Antonov Airport that made it a symbol of industrial continuity from the USSR into independence.
Ukraine issued this coin during a period of active numismatic nation-building, producing dozens of commemorative silver pieces anchoring Ukrainian identity to engineering and cultural achievements that predated 1991 but could be claimed as national heritage.
