Kühnring is a small market village in Lower Austria, and its 1920 Heller note belongs to the sprawling Austrian Notgeld phenomenon — a direct consequence of the postwar coin shortage that left municipalities across the former empire printing their own fractional emergency money. The Austro-Hungarian currency system had collapsed, copper and nickel coinage had vanished from circulation, and local governments had little choice but to fill the gap themselves.
The two signatories, Karl Ledermann and Johann Beser, were almost certainly municipal officials rather than banking officers — Kühnring had no bank of its own. Notes from villages this small were typically redeemed quickly and discarded, which keeps surviving examples genuinely scarce.
