| Description de l’avers | The obverse is printed on a yellow-ochre guilloche underprint and carries three vignettes in intaglio: at left, a sailing vessel on open water; at centre, an allegorical female figure seated on a rock with a stringed instrument, a harbour and ships visible in the background; at right, an oval vignette with a deer in a landscape. The denomination numeral '20' appears in large figures on both sides of the central vignette, with the bank title 'BANCO DE MARACAIBO / COMPAÑIA ANÓNIMA' and capital statement at the top. A promise-to-pay legend in Spanish runs below the central vignette, with the date and place of issue on the handwritten line above. |

The Banco de Maracaibo was a regional institution based in Venezuela's second city, operating in an era when the country's banking sector was fragmented among competing state-chartered and regional banks, each issuing their own paper. The American Bank Note Company handled a significant share of Latin American private bank printing in this period, and the quality differential between ABNC-printed notes and locally produced alternatives was stark enough that it actually influenced public acceptance.
Pick 195 is among the scarcer pieces from this issuer. The Banco de Maracaibo's charter was revoked during Venezuela's late-19th-century banking consolidations, cutting short the circulation life of the series.
