Aufgebraucht die fette Nahrung, Schlechte Wirtschaft leer die Keller, Die Äbtissin saß in Sorgen, Täglich schritt das Unheil schneller. Fast zur Angst stieg schon ihr Denken, Seufzend rang sie ihre Hände: Ach wenn nur ein Wunder käme, Das des Klosters Schicksal wende! Und sie ging zur Waldeschmiede, An der Luft sich zu erquicken, Aber schon am Eingang muß sie Aufgeregt den Schmied erblicken. Und er grüßt sie: Hohe Herrin, Mir gings wunderbar und eigen, Wollt schon melden in dem Kloster Darf ichs Frau Äbtissin zeigen? Gestern kam längst von der Weser Herein Mann, schwach von der Reise, Ich gab ihm, ob seiner Schwäche, Lagerstatt und etwas Speise. Helmarshausen is a small town on the Diemel River in what is now northern Hesse, historically significant as the site of a Benedictine monastery whose scriptorium produced the Gospels of Henry the Lion in the twelfth century. By 1921 it was a backwater municipality scrambling, like hundreds of German towns, to issue its own Kleingeldscheine to compensate for the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that followed the First World War and the economic dislocations of the early Weimar period.
