Helmarshausen is a small town on the Diemel River in what is now northern Hesse, historically significant as the site of a Benedictine monastery whose scriptorium produced the Gospels of Henry the Lion in the twelfth century. By 1921 it was a backwater municipality scrambling, like hundreds of German towns, to issue its own Kleingeldscheine to compensate for the chronic small-denomination coin shortage that followed the First World War and the economic dislocations of the early Weimar period.
The DeNG reference groups three varieties under this single type — likely distinguishable by serial number range, date, or minor printing differences, a common pattern among municipal issues of this class where print runs were small and production inconsistent.
