The 1948 Madagascar essais were struck at the Paris Mint as trial pieces submitted for approval before authorizing full production — a standard step in French colonial monetary administration. Madagascar was still under French authority at this point, a decade before independence in 1960, and the Union Française framework that replaced the old colonial structure after 1946 prompted a broad reissue of subsidiary coinage across French territories. This piece is one of those transitional products.
