Atarneos (also spelled Atarneus) was a small but strategically significant Greek city on the Mysian coast of Asia Minor, directly opposite Lesbos. In the mid-fourth century it came under the control of Eubulus, a former banker's slave who built it into an independent power, and later passed to Hermias — a eunuch philosopher-administrator and associate of Plato — before falling to the Persians around 341 BC when Hermias was captured and executed by Artaxerxes III. This tiny bronze was likely struck under one of those rulers.
