Mongolia's 1992 Columbus issue was part of a wave of commemorative gold struck by smaller nations capitalizing on the quincentenary of 1492 — a commercially driven phenomenon that saw mints worldwide produce collector pieces for markets with no organic connection to the event. The Bank of Mongolia had virtually no domestic collector base for such material; these were produced explicitly for export to European and American dealers.
KM#60 is well documented in the series but sees little specialist attention precisely because the issuing authority is incidental to the subject matter.
