The inner circle is framed by a recessed border with fine concentric lines. The legend DISCOVERY OF AMERICA arcs along the upper portion of the outer annulus in raised Latin letters, while the commemorative dates 1492•1992 are inscribed along the lower arc, marking the 500th anniversary of Columbus's first voyage. The coin employs a two-tone proof finish with frosted devices against a deeply blackened field in the annular border.
