| Descrizione del dritto | Central field features the state emblem of the Mongolian People's Republic — a circular device depicting a horseman before a rising sun over mountains, encircled by wheat sheaves and a ribbon bearing the Soyombo symbol at the base. The date 1992 is divided to either side of the emblem, with the denomination 1000 inscribed below. The legend MONGOLIAN PEOPLE'S REPUBLIC curves along the upper periphery in Latin script, while the Mongolian traditional script rendering of the denomination appears at the bottom of the field. The coin displays a two-tone proof finish with a frosted relief against a mirror-polished field on one half and a contrasting blackened field on the other. |

Mongolia's 1992 Columbus issue was part of a wave of commemorative gold struck by smaller nations capitalizing on the quincentenary of 1492 — a commercially driven phenomenon that saw mints worldwide produce collector pieces for markets with no organic connection to the event. The Bank of Mongolia had virtually no domestic collector base for such material; these were produced explicitly for export to European and American dealers.
KM#60 is well documented in the series but sees little specialist attention precisely because the issuing authority is incidental to the subject matter.
