The Institut d'Émission d'Outre-Mer was established in 1966 to manage currency for French overseas territories following the dissolution of earlier colonial monetary arrangements. This particular note is distinguished by the absence of the "RÉPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE" overprint — present on the standard issue — making it the rarer of the two variants within the P#26 series.
Why certain notes left the Banque de France's Paris presses without that overprint remains a matter of some debate among collectors. It was not an error in the conventional sense but likely reflects a specific territorial or administrative allocation where the overprint was deemed unnecessary.
