The Joliba was a shallow-draft paddle steamer built for the Niger River trade in the 1880s, operated by the French colonial administration to extend commercial and military reach into the interior of West Africa. The river itself — called "Joliba" in Mandé languages long before European cartographers settled on "Niger" — was only navigable in sections, and the Joliba was specifically designed for the upper reaches where deeper-hulled vessels grounded out.
