Issued under Enver Hoxha's isolationist government — or rather in the months immediately following his death in 1985, as the regime under Ramiz Alia cautiously maintained the same commemorative program — this piece celebrates a rail network that was itself a point of fierce national pride. Albania had no railways at all until 1947, making it the last country in Europe to build one, and the network was constructed almost entirely by voluntary youth labor brigades under ideological compulsion.
Gold commemoratives from this period were produced almost exclusively for foreign hard-currency export, never intended to circulate domestically.
