Issued to mark the 150th anniversary of the first horse-drawn railway on Czech territory, the Česká Budějovice–Linz line completed in 1832 — one of the earliest continental European railways of any kind. The line was built primarily to carry salt and goods through the Bohemian Forest rather than passengers, and it predates steam traction on Czech soil by several years.
The .500 silver content reflects Czechoslovakia's standard for commemorative issues of this period, when hard currency conservation pushed silver fractions steadily downward from the finer alloys used in the 1950s and 1960s.
