Obverse description Central motif of a Hō-ō (mythical phoenix) facing right, flanked symmetrically by two small Paulownia flower seals in the field. The legend 日本國 (State of Japan) appears along the upper periphery, while the lower legend reads 昭和 年 (Year of Shōwa), with the reign year intentionally left blank as befits a pattern piece. The design is executed in high relief against a flat field, with a raised rim encircling the entire obverse.
