Stadt Melle issued this note as part of the Kleingeldersatz wave that swept German municipalities in 1920, when small-denomination coins effectively vanished from circulation — hoarded, melted, or simply unable to keep pace with rising prices. Towns, savings banks, even individual businesses printed their own fractional scrip to fill the gap, producing thousands of distinct local issues across Weimar Germany.
Melle, a small town in the Osnabrück district, left no particular mark on notgeld scholarship. The 10-Pfennig denomination was the lowest rung of meaningful utility — below it, the arithmetic barely justified the printing cost.
