Maria Theresia's monetary reforms of the 1750s and 1760s reshaped Habsburg coinage on a practical level — the 10 Kreuzer was part of a rationalized system designed to align Austrian circulation with the Conventions-Münze standard agreed upon with Bavaria in 1753. The .500 fineness was a deliberate concession to production economics, not a debasement in the pejorative sense, but a calculated adjustment to keep small silver in circulation rather than hoarded or melted.
After Theresia's death in 1780, her portrait coins continued to be struck retroactively for trade purposes — a practice more famously applied to her Taler but which extended to lesser denominations in certain mint runs.
