Among the most politically charged examples of Austrian Notgeld, this 10 Heller piece was issued not by a municipal authority or savings institution but by a local chapter of the Antisemitenbund — the German-Austrian Protective Association, an openly antisemitic organization that used the post-WWI currency emergency as an opportunity for both practical financing and propaganda distribution. Emergency scrip issued by political associations rather than civic bodies is genuinely rare within the Notgeld corpus.
The Amstetten chapter's use of the Notgeld format in 1920 coincided with a period of acute economic instability in the rump Austrian state, when hundreds of local issuers flooded the market. That cover allowed ideologically motivated scrip to circulate alongside entirely mundane municipal issues.
