The Board of Commissioners of Currency, Malaya and British Borneo was a joint issuing authority covering what would soon become three separate sovereign states — Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. This 1961 note was printed well into the twilight of that arrangement; political pressure for independent currencies was already building, and the Board was dissolved in 1967 when the three-way currency interchangeability agreement finally collapsed.
Thomas De La Rue held the printing contract throughout the Board's existence. The P#9 series is not especially scarce in circulated grades, but notes retaining strong color are harder to find than the survival numbers suggest — the paper responds poorly to the humidity and handling conditions typical of the region.
