Cuba's first railroad, inaugurated in November 1837, predates Spain's own domestic rail network by nearly a decade — a peculiarity of colonial investment driven by the sugar industry's demand for bulk transport rather than any ambition to modernize the island's infrastructure. The Havana-to-Güines line moved cane, not passengers, as its primary commercial purpose.

This commemorative was part of Cuba's prolific late-1980s hard-currency coin program, issued almost entirely for export sale to foreign collectors rather than domestic circulation.
