Sonora's state government began issuing its own currency in 1913 because the national banking system had effectively collapsed under the pressures of the Revolution. Governor Maytorena — a Maderista who briefly allied with Villa before breaking with Carranza — authorized the emission to keep commerce moving in a state that was both geographically isolated and militarily contested. The notes were printed locally in Hermosillo rather than sent to Mexico City or abroad, which is why paper quality and impression consistency vary noticeably across surviving examples.

Juan Sánchez Azcona's co-signature is the detail worth pausing on: he was a prominent journalist and close confidant of Madero, not a banker.
