Obverse description Central square perforation surrounded by a raised square rim, with four Chinese characters in regular script (kaishu) arranged in cruciform fashion around the central hole. The character 常 (Sang, 'Always') appears at the top, 通 (Tong, 'Circulation') to the right, 平 (Pyong, 'Constant') at the bottom, and 寶 (Bo, 'Treasure') to the left, together reading 常平通寶 (Sangpyong Tongbo), the standard legend of the Joseon dynasty cash coinage. The fields are plain and unadorned, consistent with the cast production technique. The outer rim is slightly raised and rounded.
