Australian florins of this period were struck in sterling silver throughout the war years, even as Britain itself abandoned silver coinage in 1920 and later debased further in 1947. The Commonwealth maintained .925 fineness partly from convention and partly because Australian silver production made it economically defensible — the country was among the world's largest silver producers.
The 1945 issue is the key date, with mintage figures sharply curtailed late in the war.
