The date 1901 appears along the lower periphery, flanked by decorative dots, with the mint letter A (Paris) incorporated into the legend. The Cretan State was an anomaly — technically autonomous under Ottoman suzerainty but effectively administered by the Great Powers following the 1897–98 intervention that ended sustained intercommunal violence on the island. Prince George of Greece served as High Commissioner from 1898, giving the state its nominal sovereign, and the coinage issued under his authority was struck in Paris. This drachma series was deliberately aligned with Latin Monetary Union specifications, a political signal about where Crete's administrators expected the island to end up.
Crete formally unified with Greece in 1913, making the Cretan State coinage a twelve-year experiment.
